About the client
The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) is a multinational peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan, with some 20,000 staff, that assists the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan nationwide in providing a safe and secure environment.

Background
In Afghanistan most of the civil infrastructure has been rendered practically useless as a direct result of more than 20 years of conflict. Therefore, providing quality waste management solutions is among the most difficult tasks.

NATO produces 35,000 cubic meters of liquid waste and 9,500 tons of garbage. When the waste set-up is faulty, or the right equipment is missing and waste services come to a halt - even for a short period of time - serious risks for human beings and the environment arise, entailing disastrous and irreversible consequences.

The challenge
One of NATO´s military camps was suffering from a collapsing waste removal system. An emergency was clearly impending and NATO commissioned RA to provide a rapid response, in order to avoid serious damage to our client's operations.
Adequate equipment and vehicles were not readily available locally, logistics under these circumstances are complicated, and delivering quality services is even tougher.

The competitors
Several major players were considered for this pertinent task. But few were willing to accept the challenge and the difficult circumstances. Except for RA International.

The solution
Our staff responded to the crisis immediately and identified that only a tailor-made solution would be able to meet the urgency of our client's requirements. Our procurement specialists were able to capitalize on our developed network of suppliers and procured the equipment necessary for the emergency clearing of waste.

At the same time, our logistics department worked out solutions for swift handling of all documentation and customs clearances to ensure rapid shipping of all goods. Only 48 hours later a chartered Antonov-124 took off from the Netherlands to deliver waste trucks and other equipment to Kabul, where they were deployed immediately upon arrival.

The result
The quick response of our staff and the efficiency of all our departments turned out to be crucial in avoiding a worst-case scenario from happening. All waste was recovered safely and disposed adequately. We got the job done. As always. We deliver. Regardless!
