About the client The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) is a multinational peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan, with some 20,000 staff, that assists the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan nationwide in providing a safe and secure environment.
Background In Afghanistan most of the civil infrastructure has been rendered practically useless as a direct result of more than 20 years of conflict. Therefore, providing quality waste management solutions is among the most difficult tasks. NATO produces 35,000 cubic meters of liquid waste and 9,500 tons of garbage. When the waste set-up is faulty, or the right equipment is missing and waste services come to a halt - even for a short period of time - serious risks for human beings and the environment arise, entailing disastrous and irreversible consequences. |
