Background
The lack of reliable sources of electricity in Afghanistan makes power generation a crucial issue for operations and project delivery. Especially in remote locations, where a variety of obstacles challenge the timely delivery, installation and maintenance of generators.
The logistics infrastructure throughout the country is insufficient and the condition of roads is often very poor. And the transport of supplies and equipment to the Northern region of Afghanistan remains an extraordinary challenge.
The challenge
The Salang Tunnel is the world's highest road tunnel and is the most crucial log jam for the supply chain on the way to Mazar-e Sharif and Kunduz.
Careful planning is essential when road condition, technical defects, weather, or political unrest pose serious threats to timely delivery. The logistics of sensitive equipment or heavy cargo is a challenge in every aspect. This is why we were excited to receive a request for the transport of a 640 KVA generator set (13,000 kg and 4 meters long) to the Mazar Province via road.
The solution
With the help of our logistics and transportation managers, a detailed plan was established which allowed us to assemble the right team and the appropriate equipment.
One of our trucks was specially equipped with the latest telecommunications technology for the strenuous trip up the pass, in order to allow us to locate the shipment at all times. A small team of drivers, a mechanical expert and support staff accompanied the shipment to ensure that problems could be resolved immediately.
Due to frequent and substantial renovation of the tunnel, delays of both hours and days aren't unusual. However, our staff successfully coordinated the passage with the Afghan military forces, in order to ensure a safe passing through the tunnel, without any delays.
The result
With our contact network and a strong action plan we were able to provide a reliable transport of the generator. Upon arrival, it was installed immediately and thanks to the timely delivery, the project timeline was secured.
